I've checked a bit more and as I suspected, the name of the Windows XP 32
bit driver (HP color LaserJet 2605 PostScript Printer Driver Package -
clj2605_PS_pd_win2kxp2003.exe from the HP web site) is different from that
in Windows Server 2008 x64.
Windows Server 2008 x64 - HP Color LaserJet 2605/2605dn/2605dtn PS
Windows XP 32 bit - HP Color LaserJet 2605dn_2605dtn PS
This is why you get the problem you do. This usually means that the two
drivers are in some way "incompatible".
Unfortunately, this situation is not uncommon with mixed Windows version
scenarios. It was a major headache with Windows XP and Windows NT 4 print
servers. It is less common with Windows XP and Windows Server 2008, but
still can be an issue.
If you don't have a Vista 32 bit workstation available, try the steps at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm - the downside is you
have to do this to each XP workstation - it is not a centralized solution.
Following up on Alan's suggestion, if you have Vista 32 bit workstation
available, follow the steps below. I don't have an HP 2605 printer, but I
tested these steps after creating a "printer" on a Windows Server 2008 x64
print server and an XP (32 bit) workstation was able to send a Test Print to
that "printer" - I couldn't actually print the document, but, the spool file
showed up in the print queue on the Windows Server 2008 x64 print server.
1. Add the HP 2605 printer to the Windows Server 2008 x64 print server using
the ...PS driver and share it - use a short share name (e.g. HP2605PS)
2. logon to a Vista 32 bit workstation using a user account that is an
administrator on the workstation and on the print server (a domain account
is handy for this)
2. in Printers, right click in the right pane, select Run as administrator,
Add Printer; click Continue
3. click Add a network... printer
4. click The printer that I want isn't listed
5. select the Select a shared printer by name radio button
6. key the UNC name for the printer (e.g \\disc2008hv\hp2605ps); click Next
7. add or remove the check mark from "Set as the default printer" as you
desire; click Next
8. click Finish
9. in the right pane of the Printers window select the HP 2605 printer,
right click, select Run as administrator, Properties; click Continue - this
will display the printer's Properties page showing the Properties from the
print server
10. select the Sharing tab; click Additional Drivers...
11. add a check mark to x86 Type 3 - User Mode; click OK - it will take a
minute or so for the driver to get installed on the print server - even
after the "file copying" stage ends
12. click Close
If you check the printer's Properties, Sharing, Additional Drivers... on the
print server itself, you should see that there is now a check mark beside
x86
You should now be able to add the HP 2605 printer as a network printer on an
XP workstation. If you have previously installed a different driver for
this printer on the XP workstation, you may need to remove it before
connecting to the network printer on the Windows Server 2008 x64 print
server.
Let us know how this works out for you (or not).

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
