Setting Up Server 2008

Hello everyone. I am playing around with Server 2008 Enterprise. I have it
installed as a virtual machine along with XP Pro, as a virtual machine. I
would like to setup a domain and active directory with just those two
operating systems. My tower is connected to a router and a cable modem.

XP gets an IP address from the router. Is it possible to establish a domain
and have my XP Pro VM join a domain, get an IP address from the server and
have DNS working?

Thanks.

Hello John,

Yes, it is possible in a virtual environment. But for the ip addressing you
have to choose either fixed addresses or disable DHCP on the router. Use
only one DHCP server to avoid conflicts, server or router. But i prefer fixed
addresses for the VMs, as for a server always.

Best regards

Thank you for your reply. So, I do not have to install DHCP server on the
server itself?

Hello John,

You can also use the router for DHCP.

Well, I currently have a router which plays as a firewall, DHCP, and DNS. On
the server, I run dcpromo and create a domain as well as in stall Active
Directory. Is this a correct statement. On my client, I just have to join
the domain, right?

Do I leave DNS and DHCP on the router?

Hello John,

DNS is essential for Active directory and should run on the DC. Configure
the DNS server on the DC to forward to your ISPs DNS server.

Thank you. I'm a bit confused with the configuration with DNS with 2008
Server. Here is my setup:

Buffalo router which plays as a DHCP server, DNS and firewall. A typical one
you buy from the store. The default gateway is 192.168.11.1. I have my
domain controller setup, but I've noticed that when I log into the server, I
can't see my only client that is apart of my domain through Network
neighborhood and I cannot see my server from my XP Pro client.

Is this a DNS problem? How do I configure DNS?

Thank you.

Hello John,

Seeing the client over network neighbourhood requires that at least NetBIOS
over TCP/IP is enabled on the NIC properties WINS settings. Additional if
i remember correct you have to enable network discovery on the network and
sharing center on the 2008 server.

The ipconfig should look like this on the DC:

ip 192.168.11.x
sm 255.255.x.x (according to the routers)
dg 192.168.11.1
dns DC ip address (DNS server configured according to the previous article
about FORWARDERS)

XP machine similar as the DC, just a different machine ip address. So the
DC as DNS server NOT the router.

Best regards

With the server IP address setup, I have the default gateway pointing to my
router (192.168.11.1) and DNS pointing to itself (IP address of the server).
On the DNS server, I have the DNS forwarder pointing to my router, which is
192.168.11.1. That was the only configuration I made on the DNS server.

Is this correct?
