hi Everyone,

Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Currently, my Windows Active Directory network is running pure Windows 2003
Domain Controllers. Now I just got a Window 2008 (64bit) server and would
like to make it as a domain controller.

Would there be any issues to do this way? Would that be any changes to the
Active Directory network? Also, the procedures to promo the W2k8 box to a DC
is same as what to do with a W2k3 box?

Any suggestions would be great... I never promote a W2k8 box to a DC though.

Thank you very much for your help!

Bobson

Hi Meinolf,

Great to hear from you again! Thank you very much for the details! It is
very helpful. But I still would like to ask some questions as my case is
slightly different.

The W2k8 server that I am going to put is on one of the sites in our
network, which is to replace the old DC having some hardware problem. And our
FSMO role DC is at our main site. And our main site is a "central" service to
repl with all other sites. So should I still transfer the FSMO from the DC in
our main site to the other site?

Would what I be doing is a migration from W2k3 domain to W2k8 domain instead?

Thank you very much again!

Hello Bobson,

The adprep command i would run on the existing Main site DC to avoid connection
problems from the site. Then make sure the changes are replicated to all
other DCs with repadmin /showrepl or replmon.

Personal i prefer and suggest to have the FSMO roles always on the newest
DC, as with having the PDCEmulator role a new security group is created and
also RODCs require that FSMO are on the Windows server 2008 DC.

Migration will be migrating to a new domain for example, you just do an upgrade
of the OS on the first DC in the domain.

Best regards
