Several Failed Updates for Windows Media Player 11

I tried again to install Windows Media Player 11 (for Windows Media Center
Edition 2005)via automatic update site by selecting the optional update and
it failed with Error Code: 0x80246001. This is my 3rd attempt to install
since April, and all have failed with the same error code. I searched this
group using the error code alone, and found only references regarding the
Malicious Software Tool.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete %windir%\SoftwareDistribution <=this folder (typically
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution)

3. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

4. Reboot.

Thank you for your response... but now I have a couple more quick questions
regarding your advice.
I found the folder via My Computer (explore) that you recommended deleting.
I have my settings show me the hidden files and folders. That file contains
almost 68 Mb of files! At least, on my system anyway... Some of the file
names/descriptions show up in blue text... most are black. Will this folder
re-create itself after I delete it? Isn't this where the data is contained
that is also referenced in the Add/Delete Software utility in Control Panel?
After I've stopped the service, do I need to delete the file via the Command
promt, or can I just right-click/delete from My Computer (explore)?
Sorry for all the additional questions... I just want to be clear on what
I'm doing, how I'm doing it, and what to expect after I reboot. Thank you
for your help!

Please follow my instructions to the letter.

A new, empty folder will be created on reboot.

You can delete the folder manually if you want.

After rebooting, your problem(s) may have been resolved.

The only consequence of these actions will be that your Update History at
Windows Update website will be deleted.
