Several Problems After XP SP2 Install

A friend is having a problem with her computer after installing SP2. Once she
installs, she cannot directly enter an address into Internet Explorer. The
site will not open. Only if she uses a link (from an e-mail message, for
example) or a saved favorite will IE work. Also, she is noticing general
slowness throughout her computer, such as if she attempts to view folders in
My Computer it may take several minutes for them to display.

If she uninstalls SP2, all of these problems go away immediately. However,
when she re-installs, they return.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I have the exact same problem. It takes forever to open windows etc. I
really hope someone comes up with a fix for this.

If you go to the Windows Update website you will see that there are specific
steps that you need to take to prepare your system for Service Pack 2.
Briefly, these include clearing your Temporary Internet Files, defragging
the hard drive, disabling your anti-virus software and making sure you have
all the latest drivers for your hardware. Click on the link on the Windows
Update website for all the details.

Personally, I have not installed SP2 and my system runs just fine. I run a
firewall, anti-virus and spyware software and I download and install all the
critical updates other than SP2. I'm going to wait on installing SP2 for a
few more months. You may want to consider waiting as well. Remember that
the installation of Service Pack 2 is not required. This is a major upgrade
to the XP operating system and it poses risks as well as benefits.
