Severe font change in vista

My desktop font has suddenly gone to squares, circles, question marks, and
other crazy script. No letters are visible at all.

Obviously I still have normal typing/font while in this site window, and
nearly all internet content continues to appear as it should. All
desktop/word/excel content is the garbled stuff as mentioned above.

Any ideas why, or how to fix?

Try using "Classic Windows" for your Theme setting to see if that helps. If
the Aero theme is broken, I would try running SFC.
Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop
