Jimmy,
Go to the Windows Update site and click "View Installation History" and make
sure all of the critical updates are "successful" and not "failed". I had to
uninstall KB842773 then go to the "Update" site and reinstall it because of a
faulty registry value. Then I went to Administrative Tools>Services and made
sure the "BITS" service was started and set to automatic. In My
Computer>Properties>Automatic Update Tab, make sure it's set to Automatic.
Then go back to the update site and XP SP2 "should" install without a
problem. It worked for me, hope this helps you. Good luck.
