sfc /scannow says I need to replace netplwiz.dll.mui & wiaservc.dl

I'm having two problems with new Vista PC that the place I bought it from
can't help me with.
1. Can only map a network drive if I don't have to login, & if it does map,
explorer crashes when I try to disconnect it.
2. Get WIA errors on system startup & trying to use scanner or Photoshop.

I ran sfc /scannow as per <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833> and sure
enough, it came up with several errors that it was unable to fix.
These included netplwiz.dll.mui and wiaservc.dll.

The article says to "replace the file with a known good copy of the file"
but I don't know where to find "good" copies of these files.
I don't see them on the vista install disk and I can't find any reference to
them in Microsoft support to download.

Does anyone know where I can download "good" copies? I'm using Vista SP1.

Thanks,

I checked those files on my computer. They come from Microsoft and
therefore
should be present on you install DVD.
I will try to locate them and come back with the information.

I do not think that you will be able to see them yourself on the Vista install DVD.

Open MSConfig and on the General Tab click on the button named Expand. Make sure
that your DVD is in the DVD drive and install those 2 missing files or Run sfc
/Scannow with the Install DVD in the computer

Hi--

You don't need to download good copies of the files. Either replace them
from SFC per Peter's instructions or you can put in the Vista DVD and run
Startup Repair to do it.

Best of luck,

CH

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the good advice, unfortunately none of those methods updated
the problem .dlls.
FYI: MSConfig no longer has the expand function to copy/replace files in
Vista so I wasn't able to use the most direct method.

Hello Peter,
Unfortunately it's not that easy to get files from the Windows Vista DVD.
You have to have a Wim filter driver installed to be able to mount the
install.wim file which is what contains most of the files of the OS.
To install the wim filter driver, you need to download and install the
Windows AIK. Link is in the article listed below.
This article's resolution points to how to do this for one particular file,
942968 Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a
computer that is running Windows Vista: "0x80070246"
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;942968

So you can use the steps in this article , just change the files names to
the filenames that are missing or corrupted.
The question of course is whether or not the files were updated post the
files on the DVD, if so they should be updated with the more current
versions of the files.

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
