If I want to change OS from Windows 2000 to Windows XP.....do I have to
reformat my hard drive?

A clean install will require reformatting the drive, The install CD will do
this before the installation takes place.
An update installation will not reformat the drive. If you elect this
option, you will need XP Pro.

True but you can see why upgrading from W2K to XP might be considered
updating Windows, yes?

Perhaps you could call it a "service pack".
