I recently installed Messenger Live and tried to initiate folder sharing.
Messenger indicates that my computer doesn't support folder sharing and I
must convert my FAT disk to NTFS. Are there any risks associated with this
and is it something I should do? Thank you.

Greetings Bill,

NTFS is a far better file system than FAT, I'd highly suggest updating not just for Sharing
Folders but for other benefits including faster defragmentation, better reliability, and
journaling. Unless you have some old ancient file system utility (which frankly, you
probably shouldn't be using anyway), everything will continue to run fine.

Thank you, Jonathan. Is this something I would start before going to bed?
Does it take a long time? The computer that I have to convert here at home
has a 40gb drive. Thanks again.

Hi Bill,

To be honest, it has been awhile since I did a NTFS conversion myself but I don't really
recall it taking that long, an hour tops probably. I'd also suggest you defragment it
afterwards, since the conversion usually fragments the drive slightly.

jonathan wrongly did not warn you of the dangers of converting a file system
with files you need on the drive.

If you want to go ahead, back up important things first.
