To share a printer over the network you need a printer that prints only. Clark... |

WALOC...
All you really need is the correct driver for the printer on Vista, all the ones I have tried from my vista lappy work. The default printer is a hp LaserJet 3015 connected to an XP box. That is an all in one fax/scan/print and works flawlessly using the default XP driver transferred automatically and that was over wireless to the switch. As for drivers try the XP version as that seems to work for me so far, other than the fax I have printed to a hp psc 1200 scanner/printer a Canon ip2000 and flawless, borderless photos on a Canon ip4200 all using the XP drivers. 98 was a little mere difficult to network but you can use an XP network setup wizard but after that change the workgroup to the Vista (and win98) default of workgroup instead of mshome. It can be a bit hit and miss for a beginner but you can set it up manually, It's been a while but I remember it may take a reboot or two. -- Brad Leyden 6° 43.5816' S 146° 59.3097' E WGS84 Forecast for tomorrow, heavy showers overnight with a fine day. I just tried this (again) for a customer after a Comp USA tech could not figure out the problem. The multi function printer (with card readers also) is installed on a computer via USB port, the remote computer that is on the network trying to share the MFP has all the software and drivers installed. The computer that is accessing the printer over the network, when you right click on printer properties and print test page, acts normal but then spits out a blank page. also will not print from any other app. The printer works fine with the computer it is attached to. I have dealt with this many times with many customers and have had no luck. Both computers are running XP Home. the printer is shared properly and I can even look at the settings of the printer from the remote computer but not print. I have an HP Photosmart 4180 MFP and it prints just fine over the

Of course, I can't scan over the network, and as far as I know I can't access the memory cards over the network (haven't tried, but could they be made to share?). But as for printing, it's just like any other printer. I shared the printer, enabled printer sharing in the Network and Sharing Center, and connected. It prompted me that it was going to install the printer drivers on my remote machine(s), and I was on my way. |

Maybe yours is new, aka the motherboard in the printer is wired differently? the MFP's I speak of , one had to be four years old and the other about two years old. What gets me about this is, I was the third computer repair guy out to fix the problem with the network share. the other two were much larger companies than mine, in the end my fix was cheaper than the two previous, as I walked in and said yup that's your problem these types of printers don't like to be shared, buy a wireless network printer ($70.00) and I will set it up for you. (they had spent more than $400.00 for the others to try to share MFP with no luck) I would be really upset if I had spent $400.00 and I could still not print. thanks for the feedback by the way. As for the age of the printers, mine is around 18 months to 2 years old, and only within the last few months was a fully Vista compatible driver available. It could be some of the older printers don't have updated drivers available? However, as I'm typing, I'm just now remembering my Epson CX660 MFP, which is around 3 - 4 years old, and it prints fine over my network as well....Not sure what the differing factor could be. I do know one thing that I have had trouble with, but it's not really a "problem" per se, but rather something that I sometimes forget to do. In XP Professional, the first time that you connect to a shared folder, you are prompted with a login screen. There is a check mark to remember the info, and from that point on, you no longer have to input the User Name/Password information. In Vista, you still get the login box, AND there is that little box you can check, however, it doesn't remember. It seems that whenever your remote machine hibernates/sleeps/shuts down that box "unchecks" itself. Sometimes if I am printing to my HP and I forget to first log in the the computer it's connected to, the print job just stalls, and nothing happens. So that could be something else to check. |
