Shared Desktop/remote assistance with Messenger - don't work

I previously used Netmeeting to share desktops ... to help someone when they
had problems but it doesn't seem to allow connections anymore.
When I try to use remote access with Messenger Live ... it won't work (not
with anyone). Is there a work around or is this a known problem. In this
last failure, I was using Live Beta 8.1 and the person I was trying to
access had Live Beta 8.0. They don't even have the option to ask for remote
assistance. What's with that?

This is frustrating when trying to help a newby do something on their pc.
If I can see what's (really) going on ... it's much easier to
help/troubleshoot.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Greetings,

Could you describe what's happening when you try? Any specific error messages, does the
invitation get accepted, etc.?

Hi,
I am trying to set up the same thing but starting with the whiteboard
and application sharing - here is one link to a microsoft article about what
ports need to be available for what parts of Windows Messenger.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...e/insid01.mspx

Short and sweet of it (Since the link is a book ) is that "TCP for 1503"
needs to be open for WB and App Sharing. - possible for your remote
Assistance - I not an expert in this (I just want to know what to turn on)

also Jonathan Kay - told me that the Router has to be UPnP Compatible.

I just found this on Jonathans site -
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/allsteps.aspx?ID=16 - I am not sure if this
is needed, because under the Exeptions tab the Windows Live Messenger 8.0 is
selected (that was one step in the setup from another source) - but I am
going to try to add those in the correct place - it looked a little differnt
for me to get to the step 5 screen shot but it was there.

I think I have everything set up right and would like to test it out with
someone who at least had it working at one time. If you want to contact me
you can do it at chornishATcap-associatesDOTcom and try to test this out.

Jonathan, the only message I get is that the other person is unable to
accept the call. they don't even see the "ring" screen display. I've tried
this with three pc's and get the same response.
From my end the ringer display says it's calling the other person, but they
don't see it. Eventually, it says that they are unable to accept the call.
I don't have a router ... my only firewall is that which comes with windows
xp... turning it off or on makes no difference (at both ends).

I too am experiencing the issue that you are describing, except with a
slightly different twist. As exposition, I am running Windows Live
8.0.00812.00 on two different systems. One is XP Home, SP2 and the other is
XP Pro SP2. With both systems, I get the following message when trying to
perform "Request Remote Assistance":

Your invitation was not sent because you need the latest version of Windows
Messenger to use the Remote Assistance feature. Please go to the Windows
Messenger update site to install the latest version.

When clicking on the provided link, I am sent to the Windows OS Service pack
update screen which tells me that my systems are up-to-date. I have since
removed and installed Messenger 7.5 eith no change in behavior. Then
reinstalled the above listed Live Messenger version with no change. Repaired
the installation, and, alas, tried the suggestions listed on the site
provided by Craig Hornish below; all with no change in behavior on either
system.

Any other suggestions out there? I am open to anything at this point in
order to avoid a long drive for a 10 minute fix.

Well "E", I'm hoping someone watching knows of a fix or work-around. This
has me stumped. I was able to use 4.7 messenger for remote access, but
haven't had any success since.

My attempts with Netmeeting aren't successful these days either. I'd be
happy to use it for that one purpose, but it must need some special
tweaking. I know "netmeeting" can work because our company uses it to
remote into thousands of pcs. I just want to connect to a few.

If anyone knows of a fix ... I'd sure like to hear it.
Thanks.
