Sharing Folders and Windows Vista

I cannot access my sharing folders in Windows Live Messenger as it just says
they are not ready. I have uninstalled and re-installed messenger but it has
no effect. The problem seems to be with the service 'Messenger Sharing
Folders USN Journal Reader service' (usnjsvc) as it is stuck on 'Starting'.
It won't actually start and cannot be stopped.

Greetings,

To attempt to fix, shut down Messenger entirely by clicking on its icon and choosing Exit.
Next, set that service to disabled and reboot.

Once logged back into Windows, click Start again and type:
%appdata%\..\local\Microsoft\Messenger
and hit enter.

Double click the folder corresponding to your e-mail address, then within that folder, drag
the ObjectStore folder to the desktop. Then click Back within that window to get back to the
Messenger folder, and delete all folders and files there. Leave this folder open.

Now set the service back to Manual.

Next, restart Messenger (the service we stopped earlier will restart on its own). After you
complete signing in again, the necessary folders will be recreated. Double-click on the
e-mail corresponding to your e-mail address, and then drag the ObjectStore folder back from
your Desktop into that folder (when prompted, merge the two ObjectStores, you can just move
and replace overtop).

You can try the feature again.

Unfortunately when Messenger restarts the service gets stuck at "Starting|"
again ? I have also tried your procedure again without copying the original
ObjectStore folder back but it makes no difference.

Regards, Ken.

Hi,

Yeah now that I think about it, that really won't do anything because the service runs
outside user accounts (that's what services do after all).

Just as a thought, have you tried doing a chkdsk /f on each of your drives? Perhaps one of
the USN journals is damaged and it's getting stuck on that.

If not, press the Windows key and R on the keyboard, type "cmd" and press enter. Then type
chkdsk /f at the command line.
