at work, using xp pro sp2 dell 4700
at home using xp home sp2 dell 4600
have similar problem/situation on both machines when updating

read update posts for the past few weeks, & heeding direction from some
posters to always install the offered critical updates, i finally decided to
install the offered updates. i have AU set to notify, but do not download or
install on both machines.

work machine:
clicked on yellow shield. offered 913580 & 890830. selected download in pop
up box. box disappeared, then within a minute or so, the yellow shield
disappeared, & never returned. waited 3 hours. did not return.

went to update site. was offered 913580, 890830 & also 905474. i did
nothing.
closed out I.E.

rebooted machine. still no yellow shield.

home machine:
clicked on yellow shield. offered 913580, 900485, 905474 & 890830. selected
download in pop up box. box disappeared, then within a minute or so, the
yellow shield disappeared, & never returned.

went to update site. was offered 913580, 900485, 905474 &890830. i did
nothing. closed out I.E.

is this normal behavior?

i have experienced this before, but just went to update site & downloaded
manually from there, sucessfully, & paid no attention to the shield
disappearing situation.

sometimes the yellow shield stays, & shows the % of progress of the download
& install when clicked.

i have no problems with machines' operation so far. (thanks to you folks &
pa)

i will wait until tomorrow & see if yellow shield returns then.

also, this article http://windowssecrets.com/comp/060511/ conflicts with the
direction i receive from newsgroups regarding always download all critical
updates.

should i just go ahead & manually download the updates & not be concerned as
to what they are & do?

any input appreciated.

always greatful to you folks!!
thank you, len kiesling

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910340
"Updates are not downloaded or the "Automatic Updates" icon does not display
the status of downloads when you enable the Automatic Updates service"

You have to reach your own conclusion when faced with conflicting advice.

thanks for reply! again! you folks come thru!
answer from article:

"CAUSE
During periods of heavy download traffic, the Automatic Updates service can
reschedule download requests on a day-to-day basis. This rescheduling can
occur over several days."

makes sense to me! article covers it all!

status update:
using xp home sp2, dell 4600 desktop

yesterday, upon shut down, i saw an option to shut down & install updates. i
assume they were downloaded in the background. i did not select that option,
just normal shut down. today, i checked to see if update shield viewed; it
did not.

i opted to go to windows update site & download manually from there. the
reasoning behind that was, i can disable the norton AV during the process. i
do not know if disabling the AV, then shutting down would work.

completed the installation of the 4 offered critical updates (913580,
900485, 905474 & 890830) successfully.

so far, all is well. i checked the update history; all green!

thank you, len kiesling
