Hi

I've recently noticed that some of my shortcuts on my desktop don't have
their proper icons and are just white pages (some with something in the
middle) but also they wont open.

Any cause to this?

Luke

It is likely that the program that the icon is associated with has been
moved, changed or uninstalled. Therefore the icon reverts to a generic
icon. If the program is still in use on the computer you can delete the old
icon and create a new shortcut on the desktop.

Sometimes the icon cache gets corrupted. At times the hard drive incurs
logical corruption. In the first instance, delete the file iconcache.db in
the following folder: C:\Users\your account name\AppData\Local. Reboot the
computer. The iconcache will be rebuilt.

In the second instance, open a command prompt in an elevated condition (run
as administrator). Type chkdsk c: /f (where c: is the drive Vista is
installed on). When asked if you want to run at the next startup type Y and
press enter. Then reboot.

I had a situation similar to the one you describe--most (but not all) of my
Quick Launch toolbar icons and some of my desktop icons changed to white,
generic rectangles. Nothing I tried fixed the icons, in fact some of them had
the "change icon" box on the properties dialog greyed out. On a hunch I
turned the User Account Control (UAC) back on (I had turned it off because it
was annoying) and the icons all popped back just like new. Try it if you also
have UAC turned off (via Control Panel\User Accounts). Hope this helps; good
luck!
