Hi,
I hope somebody can explain why the next happens:
I have on my desktop (Windows Vista Business 32-bit, Dutch language version)
a bunch of shortcuts. Some related to programs, orher to folders.
After shutdown and a restart (mostly the next day) 1 to 5 shortcuts are
placed on another position on the desktop. No sorting or whatever is set.
View is set the 'show pictograms', 'align to grid' and 'classic pictograms'.
In my opinion every shortcut than has to stay where it is.
A second behaviour is that sometimes (can't tell when) the name of the
shortcut changes into English, while the original name was in Dutch.
Example: about a month ago the shortcut of 'Spelverkenner' changed to 'Game
explorer' and today the shortcut to 'Afbeeldingen' changed to 'Pictures'.
(The ducth words meand the same as the english words the shortcuts changes
to).
Is this a bug?

Greetings and thanks in advance,
Jacob

Those activities look like bugs in that language version. Have you
installed the SP1 update for it?

If not, perhaps doing so will fix the problem.

I take it that you didn't install the English version of the SP1
update. If you did, installing the Dutch version might fix the
problem.

SP1 is installed, automatic download from Microsoft site. I presume that is
not causing it. Sometimes suddenly a 'desktop.ini' appears on the desktop.
Should not be there I presume? When it is there the same 'problem' of moving
shortcut appears. When I remove it, on the same day a restart won't move or
rename shortcuts. I check that tomorrow, on another day.

Just after midnight I restarted the computer. Well, two shortcuts changed
places, and another one moved a position down, so leaving an open spot.
So the 'desktop.ini' isn't playing a role in this.
Installed software: well, a lot
Office 2007 (official licensed pack)
Access 2003 (licenced from remaining Office 2003)
VS 2008 (free version)
VB 6 SP6
Inno Setup
McAfee version 9.0
Windows Defender
Spybot S&D
some HP utilities (it's a HP computer)
Adobe Reader 8.0
Canon camera software
Roxio Creator 9
No other browers, just IE
Windows Mail (can't use Outlook, because can't convert mailgroups to contact
groups)
and other software like: Paint.NET, IrfanView, GOM Player, AVS video
utilities, Google Earth etc. etc.)
two Zylom games: Bookwurm, Bejeweled

I don't see what program's can cause this strange Vista desktop beheviour.

TIA, grtnx
Jacob

Have you tried this?

Right click on a blank spot on the desktop. Choose View from the resulting
menu. Uncheck Auto Arrange on the resulting popup menu.

Auto Arrange is not checked, only 'Align to grid'...

It was a shot in the dark; I'm sorry it failed.

And in any case, it obviously wouldn't have addressed the labels' switching
to English...

All I can offer is a wish for good luck :-(
