shortening up the namespace path

We've recently implemented a DFS domain-based root, and I'm hearing a
variety of whimpering from some users about how this has lengthened the UNC
paths to get to resources. Our single server NetBios name was four
characters. Our DFS root name is sixteen. I know, how often does a user
use UNC paths? I agree. Nonetheless, the whimpering continues.

While I am fairly sure there is no way to significantly shorten the
namespace name (correct me if I'm wrong and please point me to a way if you
know of it), does anyone have an easy way to add a link to the namespace in
"My Network Places" so that when users browse they can click on a single
icon to access the namespace?

Thanks!

Phil

Hi,

Have you try to add in your startup script a 'net use' command for
create a network drive that aim this goal ?

net use z: \\netbiosdomainname\rootname

In my case, the people in US office are using \\NAME12\Share forms (very
cluttered and unwieldy); I, on the other side, have created
NETBIOSDOMAIN\DFS\Share form, but since it was too long, and I have DNS
suffixes applied, I've replaced NETBIOSDOMAIN with emea.int.company.com first
- that worked perfectly, and then just shortened everything to \\emea\DFS
shares. Then I mapped N: to \\emea\DFS -- and this worked even better and met
the roaring success among my users.

N:\Share - you can't beat this. And all the Network Resources are available
for browsing!

Cheers & best regards
