had installed SP 2 recently.
installed SP 2 from a disk that was created by IT guys at work.
though i have Home version, again it semed to work fine.

it worked fine till
this past saturday, the power failed island wide.

my computer was on at the time and
system in effect crashed.

sunday i turned on computer,
when power returned,

i found i could not access my wireless connection to the internet.

i could however access wireless connection
to internet only via safe mode.

suspected a firewall was created that i could not penetrate.

i tried and tried to penetrate or change the firewall
and when i went to firewall portion of SP 2
in control panel a message

said i could not access firewall as "an unknown problem occurred."

went to system restore to try and get to system before power failure.
after many unsuccesful attempts, as i could still not remove or adjust
firewall,

so, i decided to uninstall SP 2.

could not uninstall normally from add/ remove programs..

i was however able to uninstall from safe mode.

i uninstalled SP 2 and my system seems to work fine.

in attempting to download updates,
my system tells me the 75 MB update will take more
than seven (7) hours to download,
as my IP, though adsl,

is extremely slow, as i live in malta.

they sell us 512 k and give us 45 k. no kidding!!!!!!

question, okay i am sure you were wondering when i would get to the
question:

ought i install/ reinstall SP 2 from the IT disk or
allow it to come to my computer via update download?

another query: can SP 2 be downloaded in smaller blocks than 75 MB?

if not, why not?

when my computer tried to download sp 2 update, it has inevitably
failed during the download process at least four times since yesterday.

it is a problem as downloading also blocks my internet connection.

please advise,
robert in gozo.

You might want to check around and see if you can order the SP2 CD from
someone/somewhere. It can be ordered from the Microsoft web site here in the
States but out there in the middle of the Mediterranean may be a problem.
Maybe your local Microsoft web site has a link. Having it on CD will prevent
download amd installation delays in the future.

Also, if you try the CD the IT guys made for a second time, I would re-run
the Upgrade Advisor to see if anything had changed.

It has been my experience that a power loss SHOULD not cause major problems
with anything except whatever it is you're working on.

How did you arrive at the conclusion "a firewall was created"? Pretty
magical of a power outage.

Downloading SP2 in pieces is not an option from the downlaod site. I use
GetRight when downloading large files, it will allow you to restart a
downlaod if the downlaod itself is interrupted. www.getright.com

Microsoft do send the original SP2 disc across europe and I suspect even
Malta gets the occasional FEDEX flight.
Good luck
