Should I install ActiveSync 4.1 now or wait til phone arrives?

Hi. I ordered an XV6700 and it should be here in a few more days. Until
then, I use my iPAQ (without a phone) with ActiveSync 3.7. Can I just
install/upgrade ActiveSync NOW to 4.1 (the version downloadable from
MS)....then once the XV6700 gets here, just connect it to my PC and have it
recognized by ActiveSync 4.1?

Or do I need to install particular drivers/files/etc. that are
model-specific for the XV6700 from the XV6700's CD?

The CD that comes with the device and contains activesync is guaranteed
to contain the device usb "drivers" (actually just a usb identifier that
associates your device with activesync)

Therefore, I recommend installing from that CD... if the version
installed is AS 4.0, then upgrade it _after_ installing 4.0 to 4.1 which
will assure that your device will be recognized.

You can install from the download, and the new phone should be picked up
just fine. I wouldn't be surprised if the 6700 doesn't show up with AS4.0
which you would want to upgrade anyway. The downloads typically have all the
most common 'drivers' already in them. Don't remember when I last actually
installed AS off the distribution CD. Even my latest PDA-N was picked up by
the downloaded version.

Do be aware that you do loose some stuff with your current iPAQ when you
move to AS4.x. Can't help that though.

Hmm, OK, the two responses so far (thank you) have said two different
things, although I completely understand each. I'm probably safe with the MS
download version of AS 4.1; according to Sven, it should contain late
drivers (identifiers). And Beverly's correct: you ARE guaranteed of having
the right driver/identifier if you go with the CD included. I'm just trying
to avoid running one of those vendor CDs that try to install way too much
stuff.

One more thing about upgrading to AS 4.x (I currently run v. 3.7): can I
just use WinXP's System Restore function to revert back to 3.7 in the event
I don't like the phone I'm about to receive (and return it)? Or do I HAVE to
go through the many steps I've seen referred to here (pocketpcfaq.com)?

Oh, and yes, I'm aware of the downside of upgrading to 4.x (at least for
me): the loss of Backup/Restore, and no Wifi synching. I'm glad I went with
Bluetooth in my laptop I bought last fall.

Havn't yet encounted a ppc cd that does so without your permission, but,
even so, you can install async and outlook directly from the CD without
using the vendor interface by holding down the shift key when inserting
the cd and navigating to the appropriate folders and running the
individual installs.

Sven's had a blessed experience trail ;-) ... there have been a number
of ppc's left off of the downloaded version over the years although the
percentage is low.

The motivation for my suggestion is that the likelyhood of the device
running "out of the box" with the CD install is high as it is the
version validated by the oem with that specific device.

Can't argue with any of that, except maybe my blessedness. I've had my share
of AS frustrations. I just haven't had the missing USB info one for a long
time.
