Should I pick and choose updates?

In the past I would pick and choose the updates that I installed on my
machines. But, that is such a pain in the butt that I'm wondering whether
I'm just spending my time needlessly. Should I continue to pick and choose
or should I just install every update available? I know some people have
said they install everything while others kind of pick and choose. What is
recommended?

Both my machines are running XP Pro SP1 but I'd like to get both of them to
SP2. In Windows Update one of my machines has a SP2 update available, but
the other one doesn't. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi there, IMHO you should install all critical updates. You can then select the
optional components you want. Hardware components should be updated from the
manufacturers site.

As for SP2 -
Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows Update and is not
offered by Automatic Updates

Windows XP Service Pack 2 - download (for single PCs also)

Well that is pick and choose then. Most of them are not critical. This month
I believe only two or three are rated critical. I made the mistake of
installing the .NET one that is only rated "important". I usually don't
install those and with this .NET one I had to uninstall it and then use
System Restore and I still have a problem.
