I am going to sound like a real big rookie, well because I am

My portable computer is for business use only. I seem to never use th
battery as I am always plugged in somewhere

It seems like if I have a long update on a slower connection lik
anti-virus or windows update the computer shuts down after awhile. I a
thinking these updates are not finishing

I would be working on my business and my connection would be very ver
slow. They suddenly it would spead up to a good usable speed.
noticed that after I got a message that an update had finally finishe
that matched me finally being able to work

I want to know how to keep Vista from shutting down and allow update
and downloads to complete while I am asleep so when I am at the compute
I can work

I have a ton to learn

Thanks everyon
Jo

54.0 mbps

Yes, it was going to sleep in 15 minutes. I did adjust that to never.

I changed it to high performance the day I got this machine.

I know something is not right. On my older computer (probably should
not have gotten rid of it) I didn't have these problems).

It could be the quality of the internet connection could have changed.

I can sometimes get work done for maybe an hour then things slow down
very slow.
It has taken me several hours just to be able to get back in and reply
to this post.

54.0 mbps is the connection between your computer and your wireless router.
What is the router connecting to the internet over, dial-up, DSL, cable,
satellite or don't know?

The slowest connection determines your fastest speed to the Internet, unless
you happen to be working at an ISP, 54 mbps isn't it.

That sounds like the screen saver.

I don't know what you mean... you're description is vague. Could you give
an example?

You think the computer is falling asleep because you have a slow connection?

They're two separate issues.

In addition to the other replies, I suggest that you turn off automatic
updates. Set Windows to do nothing but notify you when updates are
available, and then you start them yourself when you deem it safe to do so.
