Should I update my driver?

Hi all,
I received an updated version of my video card on Windows Update
My question is should I install it? Because I read that people updating their
driver can cause the system to deactivate and I don't want this to happen

Mobile Intel 945GM (GMA 950)

Has anyone with this video card updated theirs succesfully?

Do me a favour, please? Go find the guy that told you updating your
driver will deactivate the system, and slap him for me. He doesn't know
what he's talking about. Physically changing a major device such as the
motherboard could do this, but updating a driver never will.

Generally speaking, if Windows Update found a new driver for any
device, then yes, you should install it.

If you are unsure, you should then rather go to your laptop
manufacturers website and download updated drivers from there and
install them manually. This also has the advantage of your being able to
save the new driver to CD for re-use later, should the need arise.

Do NOT touch hardware Drivers from Windows Update.

I f it says it has one, go to the hardware manufacturer's website, check for
an update, and download it from there, NOT windows update.

Then right-click on the one in Windows update, and hide it.

Because they usually hose things. Here is general information about drivers:

The First Law of Driver Updates is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Normally if everything is working you want to leave things as they are.
The exception is that heavy-duty gamers will usually want to update
their video and sound drivers to squeeze every last bit of performance
out of the hardware to get the fastest frame rates. If you're not one of
those people, you don't need to update your drivers if there are no
problems you are trying to solve.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

Don't bother with the Windows Update video driver. Download the latest
directly from the video card's manufacturer. And, no, it should not affect
your activation. If it does [unlikely], just re-activate by phone.

General rule: Don't update a driver if your system is working well unless
it contains a feature you want to add.
