How do I get alerts from WL Calendar shown? What alternatives are available?

Alerts from windows Live calendar should automatically show up as "toasts"
on your PC. You do however need to be signed into WLM for that to happen.

Alerts are delivered by
a. email
b. WLMessenger
c. SMS

Alerts configuration is accomplished in the web interface.
