I have this same problem when I had a PC with windows XP and MSN Messenger,
and now again with a new PC (of one week) Running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and
Windows Live Messenger. The problem is that I check the box that says "show
me away when I am inactive for... lets say 10 minutes. But messenger nevers
do that. It remains as showing me online even though I have been gone for
hours...and a lot of friends keep saying hi while I am not online. It just
doesn't work for me I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, puting
another time frame, deframenting etc but it just dont seem to work. Any ideas?

Greetings,

Don't rely on it. Even on my own PC it's hit or miss.

There's a whole list of things which have been known to cause this problem from OEM utilities
to screen savers to solar flares. If you're looking for a sort of workaround, you could use
Messenger Plus Live (http://www.msgpluslive.net) and when you get up to leave, you can just
type /away into any conversation window to set your status.
