Don't rely on it. Even on my own PC it's hit or miss.
There's a whole list of things which have been known to cause this problem from OEM utilities
to screen savers to solar flares. If you're looking for a sort of workaround, you could use
Messenger Plus Live (
http://www.msgpluslive.net) and when you get up to leave, you can just
type /away into any conversation window to set your status.
