Showing Hidden Folders & Files by default

By pressing the WindowsSymbol-Key & E together, I get an approximation of
the old Windows Explorer window open. How can I arrange to have this display
hidden files and folders by default?

I know that the Advanced Search does offer this feature, but I wonder
whether it is possible to see this from an Explorer-like window without
having to search for a specific file/type.
