Hi,
In general, what you're describing is a Messenger virus running on your computer.
Although given the nature of these things, not all the scanners can pick them up very easily,
if at all. You may want to attempt to use the OneCare scanner as a starting point:

Additionally, if you are a technically minded person or have a friend that is, this virus
typically lives as a separate process and you will be able to spot it on the Task Manager
processes list. Unfortunately the name varies so you need to look for one that appears
"suspecious", stop it running and then delete it.
