Of course, your computer might not be set to do that...
BTW, there's nothing wrong with turning off the power in hibernate
mode. In hibernate, the machine's state is saved on the hard drive.
OTOH, in sleep, the machine's state is saved in RAM, and will be lost
if power is removed.
I have read that Vista (or maybe it's 7 or both) does a hybrid sleep;
sleep saves the state in RAM, but also copies it to disk, as in
hibernate. On restart after a loss of power, the system detects the
loss, and restores the state from disk. Otherwise, it restarts from the
state in RAM. In that situation, it's OK to turn off power in sleep
mode.
