"Shut down" as default option for shut down?

Start->Shut Down..., a window pops up with a drop-down list
correct? Mine defaults to "Sleep". How can I make it to default
to "Shut down"?

If you mean the Start menu Power button, then this will show you how t
change the default setting for it

Create a new shortcut (rightclick desk) with the command :
shutdown /s /t 00

Drop it on start
