Check the power options in Windows (display
properties/screensaver page) and in the BIOS.
Normally a warm boot (restart) is all that is needed for
Windows to update.

|I recently bought a new computer and set it up and
installed the updates on
| the first day. The message on the log off screen says to
click the turn off
| button to finish installing the updates and the computer
will turn off
| itself. It never does. It is still on the next morning. So
the computer has
| to be shut off by holding the power button. Also because
those updates have
| not installed yet, another available update will not
install properly.
