Shut Down keyboard shortcut?

I'm a keyboard guy, and in XP I could just hit the Windows key, then U, and I
was shutting down without having to reach over to the mouse.

Just got Vista on a new laptop, and this doesn't seem to be available. I can
press Windows, but since the shut down options are icons, they have to be
clicked instead of activated with the underlined letter.

Is there a keyboard shortcut in Vista to shut down the computer?

Much thanks to anyone who can help.

Start button, Shutdown. Note that you have to change the Power Setting for
the start button shutdown icon. It's set for Sleep instead of Shutdown so you
have to use the arrow to the right of the lock to get to Shutdown. Change the
button to Shutdown in Power Options.

I also forgot for the other shutdown options use

ALT+f4 Left or Right arrow to select your choice then ENTER

Try this: Works on XP but I haven't had a chance to try it on Vista...the
Shortcut I have to Lock XP works on Vista.....
make a shortcut...
Location: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s

"The -s parameter is used to shut down the computer.

The following two parameters can be used with -s:
-f Forces running applications to close without warning.
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds."

"The following command would shut down instantly.
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00"
After you type in location hit next
tyoe in a name for it Ex; Shut Down PC
Click Finish
Do properties on the Shortcut and assign a shortcut keystroke.....
For a shortcut to lock PC create a shgortcut :
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation and then assign a
keystroke

Thank you! What a simple solution. It also answers a question for me. I use
alt+F4 to shut down apps at work in XP and now and then it wants to shut down
the computer. Now I know why. Nice bonus answer to the question.

Thanks again. Dan.

Thanks. Dave's tip is a lot simpler, but this is a lot more intriguing. I'll
give this a shot too since it looks like you could engineer an immediate
shutdown, which could be useful. Appreciate it.

Get a keyboard with a shutdown button. Creative makes a good PS2 one that
only cost me 30 bucks at Zellers. Silver multimedia keyboard. Just need to
press one button on the keyboard to shut down, also has sleep button and I
set up the mb bios to start up the computer when I press the spacebar. Now
my PC behaves just like a Mac.
