I am now on attempt 4 of a rebuild of my laptop. (XP Pro). (It has been
running beautifully for 3 years but eventually needed a rebuild). I finally
figured what is happening but not extacly which upgrade is the culprit. I
download the express upgrades at the beginning of the rebuild and have then
continued to install my software. At the end I revisit the upgrade site,
download some further upgrades and then bang! the system keeps rebooting...
I see others have had similar problems can anyone identify the upgrade to
avoid downloading - I am guessing it is to do with acpi.sys. The version
that is originally installed is 5.1.2600.1106 and somewhere in the upgrades
there is another that is downloaded but I can't remember the version. Any
ideaas help please? There are other things to do in life than build and
rebuild laptops
Thanks

Would there be a Stop code if AutoReboot wasn't set?
Check with Event Viewer what the crash symptom is.
If you are at least getting a minidump you could also use dumpchk
to get most of the information a full stop screen would give you.
Unfortuntately we never seem to get the symbolic description
from the second line without an actual stop.

Press Win-Break, switch to the Advanced tab and in the Startup and
Recovery Settings dialog uncheck Automatically restart if you want
to see the full stop message.

BTW you may get better assistance with diagnosis like this
from a newsgroup which specializes in error recovery for your OS.
