Shutdown button unresponsive

For some reason the shutdown button doesn't respond to the mouse-click
anymore.
Everything else is working.
What can be done to bring it back to life without extreme measures?
I am going to let the machine run til I reveive an answer.

With a bit more patience I would have been able to solve my own problem by
using the keyboard to activate shutdown successfully. When starting back up,
all was well and the shutdown button 'back in business'.
Don't know what could have caused the temporary malfunction.
