Shutting down Windows

I am running on Windows XP. This problem started a while ago. Whenever I
turn off computuer with the Start menu and then shut down, Window says it is
shutting down but never does. I must shut down the computer manually with
button.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am having the same problem, and it has to do with windows updates in that
it just started after I last updated 5 days ago. If this is not the correct
place to ask the question please advise where would be the best place to.

Use msconfig to disable all third-party auto-start applications, including
anti-virus and anti-malware, and reboot. That reboot might be difficult,
but then allow Windows to boot up without the third-party stuff. Then try a
shut-down. If it works, you know you have a problem with one of your
third-party applications - it's just a matter of finding out which.
