Windows updated recommended that I install this update.
The update fails with code 80070103.

When I re-started the PC it failed to start and I had to use the recovery
wizard.

Every time I start the PC I now get a message that there is new hardware and
I have to load the driver. I do not know where to load the driver from.
Product IDs on Silicon Image's site don't match those above.

Every day Windows attempts again to install the update and fails.

Anyone now how to resolve this?

Hi There,

Taking driver updates from windows update is really not a good idea unless
you like problems.

If your device is working fine it is recommanded not to update the driver,
if really needed, if the device is not functioning well that is, you should
take a driver from the manufacturers website.

Try rolling back on the driver, boot last known good configuration or use
system restore to to a date before the problem occured to try and work
around the occured problem. You can also try if you know which update caused
the problem to uninstall it.

Take the original driver from your mainboard driver cd if needed

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Thanks,

I had tried most of the suggestions. I'll look to see whether I can
uninstall the update, but doubt it as it failed. I tried rolling back, but
that failed. Manufacturer's site is not helpful either. Why does Microsoft
bother releasing these updates if they just make things worse?

Hi there,

You are most welcome

After recovering, go to the windows update site and disable the hardware
update (hide it)
If your sata controller is working fine take no further action, if not you
should have a driver cd that came with your mainboard/computer: install the
one suitable for your device.

Hardware updates are optional updates on WU, so updating is an option and
you are doing this with no warranty that it will work fine.

Product IDs on Silicon Image's site don't match those above? The only thing
you are reffering to is the error code, your computers manual should tell
which silicone image device is on your mainboard. If you found the device
and do not know how to proceed I can be of assistance.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Thanks for your continued support.

As I don't know what my SATA controller is I can't say if it is working! The
things that I use - screen, keyboard, mouse - all work as normal.

This is an ACER workbook that comes with a minimal user guide. No details
about the mother board. ACER will expect me to carry out a full system
recovery to return to factory settings - something that I'm not looking
forward to doing!

The device is surely ATI4370 Serial ATA Controller as per the Windows Update
title in the subject line? That's what I looked for on Silicon Image's site,
but could not find anything about it there.

Regards,
Irene

Hello Irene,

You are most welcome.

You mention ATI which is not Silicone Image but another manufacturer, I
suspect you have a chipset which has a lot of devices integrated.

Your drivers should be downloadable at Acer whith your service tag or model
number the should be easy to find.

I see that Acer support is making it easy on themselves and hard on the
customer ;(

If you can post the model and type of the acer you are using I might be of
further assistance.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Yes!

I finally did fix two computers here with the same problems. Both Acer
5101 PCs.

Try this (I don't have the exact text here, but you can try).

1. Boot Windows, use system restore if you have to.
2. When asked to update driver, say no and select manually (bottom
choice)
3. Enter device manager. Right click My Computer + Manage + Device
Manager
4. Double click unknown device + driver + update driver + manually
(bottom choice)
5. Select Let me choose and select Standard disk controller (bottom
choice again). Do NOT select ATI4379 even if they newer dates. It will
not install, since the service name is already installed, and the
conflict will reappear.
6. reboot computer and check if it works
7. Check Windows Update and install the Silicon Image ATI4379 Serial
Ata Controller. Now there should be no conflict.
