Simple login for kids

I work at a school for children from 5-13. Does anyone know whether there's
any software out there to allow the children to login without entering their
complete name in? Some of them have huge surnames which a lot of them don't
know how to spell so some kind of autosuggest would be perfect.

We currently have a system on xp that allows this sort of thing (through a
set of drop downs) but that software won't run in vista so some suggestions
would be great.

One option is to rename the accounts in the password utility.
Start/run, type:
control userpasswords2

Another way would be to disable the Welcome screen, (see checkbox to require
users to use Ctrl-alt-delete to log on) This would provide the dropbox of
user names at logon.

The way my friend does it at his elementary school's computer lab (he's the
tech director) is to create generic logins like "student32" where the "32"
comes from the workstation number (written in an obvious place). Also the
kids don't normally need to log in; the computers are usually on and ready
for them.

For such a setting why have multiple logon accounts in the first
place? I would suggest one simple easy to remember generic "user"
everybody uses.

For the age range you have the majority of users probably won't have
the desire or smarts to compromise the system and you're only putting
needless roadblocks in their way which will lead to frustration.

For the few that might be smart enough to engage in mischief they
probably already know how to spoof or bypass any password/login scheme
you can put in. Some kids are smart! ;-)

If you must absolutely have some kind of system to track who's doing
what for grading purpose or something like that, why not switch to
some simpler numeric login system? A login of 5-6 digits should be
more than enough and easy for even the younger kids to quickly
memorize.
