simple search

Is there a way to do a plain simple search for a string in the files
contained in a folder and in the files in its subfolders?

I just want to search for a string like "whatever" starting from a
folder, and I want to search for its presence in the the files content.

I do not want to go through a series of refined searches, with helpers,
wizards, filter and whatnot, I just want to do a search for content in
files. Plain, simple.

Can you do that in Vista and how?

Have you searched help & support for findstr, which runs in a Cmd window?
It may do what you want. Depending on the UAC and other settings, you may
have to do some setup in order to search all the files/folders you are
interested in.

Open up the folder > "whatever" in the top right box

It used to be possible to do that in a straightforward manner directlu
from the GUI - Explorer.

....just like reinveintg the wheel or re-discovering hot water at every
new OS release....

Try "Agent Ransack". It's free and fast. Hooks into the "right click"
context menu after installation. Right click on the folder you want and go
from there. Beats Windows search hands down.

On Vista 64-bit it didn't show up in the context menu but for Vista 32-bit
it did and worked just like in XP.

Yes, just adjust your search settings a bit and then do the search as
