Microsoft is working on a fix for this. If your computer is windows XP or
windows 2000 the workaround (which totally solved the problem for me is:
1. start Internet exployer 6.
2. on the TOOLS menu, click INTERNET OPTIONS, and then click the ADVANCED tab.
3. In the SETTINGS box, click to clear the USE HTTP 1.1 SETTINGS and then
click OK and apply
reboot.
It should now work fine.
the symptom this worksaroud is: IE unexpectedly exits when you view a Web
site that uses the HTTP 1.1 protocol and compression. This occurs on many
computers after the recein 918899 update being installed.
hope this helps!

Microsoft has released a hotfix for MS06-042 (KB918899):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923762/en-us Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1 unexpectedly exits after you install the 918899 update

Kat: I see the KB specifies the problem lies with WinXP SP1. So, I would
assume if you have SP2 installed, the problem won't crop up?

Hi Tom:
I haven't seen any reports of the update causing problems on XP SP2; in
fact, I have it installed on my XP SP2 PC and was able to login to
PeopleSoft and click on navigation links without crashing.

I have SP2 and have not had any crashes. However, I do get a warning of a
"potential security flaw" on opening the TIF folder via shortcut.

Has anyone heard anything about an update for this issue for users with XP
SP2 using IE6 SP2? This setup is consistent over our entire environment and
half of our users continue to experience the IE crash issue since the release
of the security update.

The work-arounds have been inaffective for us as well.

Help!!!!!!

Thanks.

I have Sp2 and all patches up to August when a new hard drive and fresh install. I'm
having the problem on some websites. IE just dramatically shuts down on any link with
the Toronto star newspaper thestar.com. Other sites do not. I thought it was
something wrong with the site.
