Since SP2, WU v5 wants me to "update" to SP1...

hi

i installed SP2 last week and got no problems at all with it.
I deactivated firewall and automatic updates service because I have a
hardware firewall and don't need another "firewall" service here eating my
ressources. The automatic updates service has always been deactivated on my
computers b/c I prefer updating manually once in a while.

Since I installed SP2 and the new WU is online (v5 i think), it always wants
me to "update" to SP1 when I do a "Express Install" (Single installation:
Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Express)) and when I do a "Custom Install..."
there are ALL the updates I already installed months and years ago!!! Like
for example:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB841873)
Windows XP Application Compatibility Update, April 2002
Windows XP Update Package, October 25, 2001
AND SO ON... all in all 38 updates I have had downloaded and installed
before I updated to SP2!
What is wrong here? How can I make WU show me the post-SP2 updates only, and
not the pre-SP1 stuff I don't need!
Or did SP2 kill all those old updates?!
Sry bout my poor grammar and thanks in advance!

Is it V5 Windows Update or V4?

From where did you download/install SP2? Had you installed one of the beta
builds?

I had exactly the same problem. I decided to install all the old updates
which WU v5 was offering. This included SP1 (though it was much quicker than
usual). I'm not quite sure what I ended up with once I had done that, as My
Computer Properties General was then showing SP1 though the SP2 features were
unaffected.

I waited until this week and then reinstalled SP2 on the basis that the WU
v5 Site only went "live" in relation to SP2 on Monday.

Everything now looks the way it should (i.e. SP2) and I don't get the old
updates when I go to WU.

Hi PA Bear,

it is definetly V5.

And I downloaded SP from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9E368D3CDB5A

Is that a beta or the final?? I can't see anything saying "beta" or
something on that page...

If this is not the final release, would it work for me if I just downloaded
the final SP2 from another site and installed it right over the current SP2
beta I got? Or wouldn't that work?

Hi Charles and PA Bear,

I solved the problem by doing the following:
1. went to V5 windowsupdate and installed SP1 but canceled after about 45
minutes of waiting for the update program to finish, restart
2. went to V5 WU and installed all 38 updates (partly from 2001 and 2002),
all pre-sp1 and pre-sp2, restart (system was "SP1" then)
3. installed SP2 again (my downloaded network-installation .EXE, 280mb),
restart
4. everything works fine. windowsupdate V5 shows the correct post-SP2
updates and system shows "SP2".

Best regards
penta

You may want to run Disk Cleanup now. Then open Defrag tool and run Analyze
to see if a defrag session is recommended.

I still find the progression both you and Charles have taken odd and
troublesome. I'd have uninstalled SP2 (and then deleted the downloaded
files) and enabled Automatic Updates. If AU then said I needed SP1 updates,
so be it. Otherwise I'd just wait till AU "summoned" me for SP2.
