Since today, automatic updates fail

running XP Pro SP2 with a genuine enterprise licence. Until today, auto
updates worked fine for me, never had the problems I read about in tech
forums etc.
This morning I found two updates: KB900485 and KB892130 (Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool). Both downloaded alright but then installation
failed. Both packages gave me an error code 0x8007F004 and recommended trying
again. Which I did 4 times now, including rebooting my machine twice.
Since there are numerous of other comments like this one I don't assume that
someone has a quick solution at hand...

You do not have permission to update . Please contact your system administrator.

Are you logged in as an Administrator ?

yes, i have full admin rights to my machine. Could this have to do with that
fact that I'm logged in to an enterprise domain (as opposed to working
locally)?

Might be related but I don't have the answer to that.
Perhaps contact MS Support
http://support.microsoft.com/

meanwhile I tried being logged in locally, still with admin rights. It still
didn't work. Then I tried with my second pc which is set up quite similar at
least in relation to OS settings etc. There the update worked.

I'll try to check with tech support, thanks anyways

As promised I'll keep you up to date:

ms support quite promptly replied to my mail where I had explained in detail
what I have explained here (download works, installation fails). The reply
was that my situation was beyond their scope: with situations that arise
AFTER the installation of updates I should turn to the standard MS support.
And of course pay for that. - I replied that they most probably hadn't read
my mail thoroughly, explaining it all over again. And now I keep on waiting...

Is the second PC also part of the domain that the first PC is ?
Does the domain do their updating via WSUS ?
Is the first PC a laptop ?

If you are in the US, *strongly suggest* you call them.

Since the update was downloaded by Automatic Updates there should be NO
CHARGE for assistance with this issue. Do not mention anything except
the installation issue of these 2 updates.
Since the updates will NOT INSTALL, then it is NOT outside their scope
and they MUST assist you for NO CHARGE.

both PCs are in the same network, and both are laptops (IBM ThinkPad T
series). One usually logs into the domain, the other one uses the workgroup
type of login. the prob arises with the one being in the domain, BUT: I also
started it up in workgroup mode, with the same negative results.

MS updates are NOT distributed automatically via the domain, we do that on a
per user basis, at least in my dept.

I'm based in Germany so there's no use to call them, they'd redirect me to
MS in Germany. But I'm glad you see it as I do, and I already sent them a
reply stating just that. That was 24 hours ago; didn't hear from them since
then.

Thanks for your input, Greetings,

-Lothar

Lothar,

I clicked through the International support link to the German page and,
sorry to say, my German isn't that good. Tried the Windows Update link
and there is no phone number supplied for you to contact just an email
link. I *think* it says that support is free, but am not sure what the
reference was in regards to phone support.
Please keep us up to date on what Support comes up with. Insist that
Support resolve this issue for FREE as that's what MS has told MVPs
concerning Automatic Updates.
