Single AD 2000 DC...would you first make a BDC of a second AD2000

Just one W2Ksp4 DC. No Exchange in the environment. Only AD and DNS are on
this box. File/print, iis, sharepoint, everything has been off-loaded to
other W2K3sp2 servers. Do I make a W2K BDC before I attempt an upgrade?
My gut says no, the migration path is too neat and clean to make a W2K3sp2 a
BDC to my existing and then promote it.
Thank you very much for your thoughts, ideas, warnings or otherwise.
Cheers.

Hello Dirt,

It is recommended to have at least 2 DC/DNS/GC per domain for failover and
redundancy. In your case add a second server to the domain which you install
directly with Windows server 2003.

See here how to:

Since Windows 2000 all dc's are treated the same with the exception of which
machine manages the five fsmo roles. I would upgrade your forest to 2003
and bring in a new dc and promote it. Move all the new fsmo roles over to
it and then flatten and rebuild the old Windows 2000 box and bring it up as
a second dc (If the hardware can manage the o/s).

I have an article on upgrading your forest from 2000 to 2003

There is no such thing as a BDC after NT4.0
