single-user version of sp2

After trying and failing to load sp2, it looks like I am going to have
to edit the registry. But before I start, I would like to know if I
can get a version of sp2 that's smaller than the full version of 266
megs.
MS states that a computer for individual use should get the smaller
version of sp2. That's fine with me, but how do I get the single-user
version? The disc I got from MS seems to be the full version; and in
making attempts to download sp2 online, when I tried to find the
smaller version, it was nowhere to be found -- the links I followed led
to a batch of updates that was only 9 megs, and wasn't labeled as sp2.
Since the lean version of sp2 seems elusive as a unicorn, I was
wondering if there's anybody out there that has actually seen it?

No.

No - they don't. They say you should use Windows Update.

The large download is the full installation of SP2 - everything you MIGHT
need. The Windows Update "version" simply downloads some, figures out what
you do/do not need, and downloads the rest accordingly. There is no smaller
complete version than the 266+MB one.

Because there is not smaller version (complete version.)

It doesn't exist. You have misinterpretted what you read.
