I am looking way how to add SRV record _sip._udp_.xx.yy to W2k3 DNS
service. The server is authoritative for xx.yy domain. The MMC do not
offer SIP as supported type of service. I am always tried dnscmd.exe and
dnssrvrec.exe, but have no luck. Is there other way but manualy edit
zone files??

The record is mistyped, correct form is: "_sip._udp.xx.yy"

Can you create the _udp subdomain and then create the _sip record by a
new record type of "other"?

Petr,

This should help.

Thanks for help, I saw this box before, but I do not imagine the
predefined types of SRV record can be overtypen by custom one. I expect
from this dropdown list can be choosen only .

You are welcome. However, I do not see what you mean by overwriting anything? You are simply creating your own custom SRV type that will be created under the zone. It doesn't have to be available in any drop-down box to create a record type. The drop-down box just shows available SRV types that the DNS console (GUI) has been pre-populated with by the engineering team. Keep in mind, any records you create get created into either a text file or entries in the zone records if AD integrated. That's it. The GUI is just an interface that creates the records, drop-down box or not.

In one word: Habit. On most MS GUI windows included drop-down list can
be only one of predefined option choosed. Is not frequently, the
predefined options can by replaced by custom one. So when I see this
box first time, I expect MS offer only those few predefined types and
other type cannot be typed in. That is the reason, Why i forget this
windows and go ahead...

I can understand habits!

With DNS, some SRVs are not in the drop-down, as you've found. In the past when we setup Exchange 2000 for instant messaging, we needed to create an "_RVP" SRV record, but it was not in the drop down box, so we had to create it manually.

Good to hear you're good to go!
