Hi,

It happens because of interference from some process running in the
background. Open Task Manager and begin selectively disabling them from the
processes tab prior to attempting to sleep until it works. Prime suspects
are antimalware/antivirus applications, as their active scanning often does
not respond correctly to terminate signals.

Hello Tempest,

The usual suspects is the network card or BIOS "Wake on..." option
enabled, or the Multimedia settings in Power Options not set to allow
the computer to sleep.

Check through the options in this tutorial for theses items and others
to help see what may be waking up your computer.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Huh??? Doesn't hibernate powers off computer completely? how can a
background task do this if power is off?

It happens because the process doesn't allow the hibernate routine to
complete - in other words the terminate signal is ignored so hte process
never completes.

It most likely won't be fixed. The problem is that some older interface
drivers do not support the process properly. Whether or not that driver is
updated is up to the device manufacturer, not Microsoft. Many manufacturers
are lax in updating drivers to be compliant with new operating system
specifications, as there is no real incentive (ie: money) to do so.

From the description of the problem in the article, it doesn't look like
something MS can fix:

> This problem occurs when you use the following two devices:

....

So, if the UHCI host controller doesn't support wake from sleep, it's
not MS fault, is it?

Also, they post a workaround (set the USB device to not wake the
computer). Looks like they are doing what they can.
