This is a very nice tutorial but unfortunately it did not help me.
I have an HPdv9728cl laptop. Sleep works perfectly with the factory
configuration but something added since seems to prevent it. I have no
idea what but it is a real PITA.

Any idea of how to trace it would be helpful[. I tried the task
manager and nothing significant seems to be running and also tried
stopping all startup programs with no luck.

Hello,
Don't know exactly what you had tried. Have you tried the following ?

Control Panel > Syatem& Maintenance > Power Options > Change Plan
Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > scroll and click the (+)
sign in front of Multi-media settings > (+) sign When sharing media >
Plug-in, set to "allow computer to sleep"
Inform me if it's ok or not.

If the trouble had started after adding SP1, and you had tried all the Power
Options in System and Maintenance, then go to HP's website and look for any
drivers or BIOS updates that are specific to the model of your computer.

I made the change but it did not help.
It seems to me the design is WRONG. What it should be is sleep happens
no MATTER WHAT unless you check off the things you want to prevent
sleep. For example a list of EVERYTHING that can cause sleep should be
a choice and you should check off the things that you want to prevent
sleep, NOT the things that should permit sleep. It would save a LOT of
energy because I bet 95% of peoples computers are not going to sleep.

It did happen after SP1 but may have already been doing it after
applications had been added. user applications should NOT cause this,
a rotten design decision in my opinion.

I also have the latest drivers and BIOS That was one of my first
tries.

I am not totally surprised, Windows has always had this problem and
they have not fixed it yet it seems.

I use Sleep (and Hibernation) all the time. They both work perfectly. So
Sleep in Vista Home Premium does work.

I found the answer. It is not Vista. It is the BISO in my machine. A
VERY useful command is
powercfg -a
It reports the sleep states supported on your machine. Mine reports
that S1 and S2 which are normal sleep modes are not available, not
supported by the firmware of my machine.
Therefore there is NO WAY to get them. I have the latest BIOS so stuck
there.
HOWEVER Hybrid sleep is available so I set the system for that and lo
and behold all is well.
I am not happy that the BIOS does not support S1 or S@ but I cannot do
anything about it. The only real problem here is a longer time to
restart and ONLY the power button will wake it.

The advantage is that the documents or other open files are saved to
disk so it is a more safe thing, no data loss.
