I'm new to Vista so please forgive my ignorance ... My machine is having
some problems with Vista's hybrid sleep. When it wakes up my partitioning
software (True Image) fails to read the partitions on my external USB drives
correctly. The last time it woke up, Windows Mail hung while booting up and
had to be restarted, and my sidebar clock had stopped. Is it best to avoid
hybrid sleep?

I had this same issue, only way I could find to not have it again was
to not use sleep or hibernate. Turn them off

Check your power setting Vista has a multitude of setting that range
from Screen, HDD, Ethernet connection, anyhow Vista power settings abuse
every part of your system.

You need to go to advanced power setting and tell it not to power down
your USB connection. ( this may solve the external drive problem )

I do suggest not putting HDD to sleep in any fashion Vista does have
issues restarting programs from sleep modes

Not sure why you say that when my computer has Windows Vista Home
Premium Service Pack 1 installed and do not ever have a problem waking up
from sleep and all programs work great and start up with no problems. What
he needs to do is check for up dates to software True Image and maybe some
other programs and he can check on the problem reports and solutions in the
Control Panel and see if there is any problems detected for his computer.
Vista has a better sleep capability than Windows XP does for the fact it
saves every thing you have open on Physical Memory and on the Hard drive for
if you lose power. So he needs to check for some compatible problems with
software and not tell him vista sleep is no good.

Go to Advance Power Settings.
Set hard drive to turn off a minute or 2 before sleep.
Set Hybrid and Hibernate modes to "Never/Off"
Under USB settings select "Disable"
Under Multimedia select "Allow ....."

By all accounts, sleep mode offers very nearly the same power savings as
hybrid.

Complaints about sleep/hibernate are some of the most frequent and
troublesome reported in these groups.

I would suggest not even using it.

I gave up using sleep and hibernate in Vista Ultimate 2 1/2 years ago.
Nothing but problems - no matter which drivers I used for my hardware.

One month ago I upgraded my computer to a new M/B, processor and RAM

Now sleep and hibernate just work!

See - it's obviously a hardware problem, not a Vista problem :-)
