I needed to swap the hard drive in my Toshiba latop from 60GB to a new
160GB.
I'm running the Windows 7 beta.
Using the windows backup tool I backed up entire system to an external
USB HDD, and made a windows rescue CD. Took about 90min.
Swapped hard drives, booted off rescue CD and Win7 saw backup on USB HDD
and did a full restore. Took about 45min.
100% success. Painless...
What I don't understand is how the backup was only 5GB when there was
40GB of system/apps on the drive....
That is some compression ratio (8:1)!
This new backup is a vast improvement and will get a LOT of use by me -
I may set my systems to backup to NAS on a weekly basis now.
I have done similar before but using Acronis True Image - never from the OS.
