Slow boot times, slow system after latest updates.

Background:
I just installed the latest set of updates. They include KB919007,
KB920685, KB920782, KB922582, and KB890830. Since the updates, my boot time
has increased from 30 seconds or so to over 3 minutes. Once the machince was
booted the entire system was lagging. I tired burning a DVD which normally
takes 20 minutes. This time it took just under an hour. I've got an AMD
3800 dual-core pc with 2GB RAM. Is one of these updates knocking out one of
my processors.

I've since done a system restore to just before the updates were installed.
I'm happy to say my computer is back to normal. However, Windows Update is
pressuring me to redownload these updates. Can I download ANY of these
updates or should I just forget about all of them? Has anyone else noticed
sluggishness after the update? Thanks in advance!

I know if you have automatic updates turned on to "notify me, but don't
install" you can click the automatic update icon on the Task Bar, click
CUSTOM (if you have a choice) and UNCHECK the updates you DON'T want to have
installed.

I can confirm that the last three MS XP Updates cause serious issues.
I'm running XP SP2 + MS Office 2000 all patched up + McAfee 2006.
Hardly any other apps.

After installing the patches on the PC, the following symptoms occured:

1) Boot time extended by x2 to x3 times.

2) Can't launch apps - login to a non-Admin user - you get 15 to 30
secs to start any app. After this, you can't! You simply get an hour
glass for a few secs and it then stops houring. No app launch.

3) Can't start Task Manager either.

4) Printing hangs the app you printed from.

5) Log-out leaves you with a totally black screen with a white cursor.
Keyboard unresponsive.

6) Restart or Shutdown doesn't!

7) Can only shutdown via power-button 5 sec hold!

Nice one MS! My PC is totally knacked. To make sure it wan't just me
or one of my apps, I foolishly installed the identical patches on an
identical PC (hardware & software). Guess what, identical issues and a
screaming wife; the 2nd PC was hers.

Some post mentions SVCHOST.exe going 100% as part of these patches.
This may be the cause but as I can't even start Task Manager, I can't
tell.

The odd thing is the delay after logon when most issues start, it's as
if some BITS or other kernel task kicks off and causes the issues.

BTW: a Restore Point 'go back' doesn't so don't waste your time. You
have to do this in Safe Mode else Restore dies 1/2 way through. Restore
messes up McAfee which could only be resolved by a "Safe mode with
Networking" boot and a McAfee manual update.

Anyone else got these issues? Please speak up. It can't just be me.

I am having these problems with this patch as well. BSOD's, machines
that reboot after logging on, and very slow login times.

I've done a system restore on a few machines, but I have 120+ of my
machines with this patch so far (I've unapproved it) and they are
located all over North America.

What's the fix? Is there going to be a new version of this patch to
patch this patch?

Oh, yes, waaaaaaaaaayyyy sluggish. (Question: Does Microsoft ever test
these updates in other than a sealed environment on their pristine test
systems?)

I had to go out and delete every single Microsoft update back to the first
of August, 2006. When I went out to re-download and install them, lo and
behold, some of those individual updates had been rolled up into one package
updatae. It installed fine. As did the next 5 or 6 updates. And now I'm
right back to where I started again.

I run a business from home, and this requires house calls to fix sick
systems. It's getting riduculous. I am half-jokingly telling them we should
all switch to Macs, which don't have all the problems that require all these
stupid security updates. (Which leads me to ask . . . is this new Vista or
whatever going to be any better considering Microsoft's track record thus
far?)

I am about to go out and delete all updates starting Sept. 1, 2006, and see
if that fixes this problem.

I have tried to turn off automatic updates. Windows security then starts
screaming at me that I am evil and have turned off auto-updates and the world
will crash down on everyone's head unless i fix it.

How do you permanently turn it OFF?????????

Wow I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having this problem. The system
restore worked for me, so I would suggest trying that. Set a restore point
before "rolling-back" so you can come back if you need to. I am going to
attempt to dwonload the updates one at a time setting a resotre point before
each one. I hope to isolate the problem update and not download it until M$
fixes it.

I'm so glad i finally found someone experiencing the same problems like me. I
really had no clue what it could be from as especially this week i installe
like 6 or 7 new rogrammes inluding Visual Studio, Oracle DB 9i, Matlab, MS
Office 2003, heavy stuff and all needed updates, it could have simply been
everything!
Just one more problem. My laptop (Acer Aspire 9412awsmi, dual core, 2gb ram)
is just one week old so still did not have any system restore points set.
Honestly, i'm too lazy to format my system and install all these programmes
again. I tried uninstalling the updates manually but of course it didn't help
much. The speed was ok again till the next restart, now it is as sluggish as
ever.
Does one of you have an idea on how to solve this problem without formating
or rolling back to a restore point that i do not have?
Thnx in advance !
