How can brand new computer freeze up sometimes (of course I have a
zillion windows at that time), and I think it is slow. Now the person
who delivered it put my oold hard drive in it ALSO so that I could
transfer the info - would that make a differece. I know they put so
much crap on new computers, can anyone help. A brand new computer
should be zooming. If you want tech info - please advise on where I go
to find it. Thanks.

It sounds like you are expecting too much out of the computer.
You should write what components are in your machine.
Any windowed OS, whether from MS or Apple or Linux, can only handle a
limited number of open windows. Performance will also slow depending on the
amount of RAM in the computer and the CPU speed or number of cores.
How "slow" a computer seems is often subjective: after moving to my uber
fast quad core with zillions of GBS of RAM, a 64 bit OS and a high end
Radeon video card I was quite impressed with the speed of the machine. Now
after a few months of daily use it seems slow . . . .

A list of what I did to speed up my daughter-in-laws new Compaq laptop.

NOTE: Disconnect from the internet prior to doing the following:

1. Had on hand a copy of the latest version of Avast Antivirus FREE
edition

2. Uninstalled the Internet Utility Suite that came with the computer. I
also uninstalled every sub install of the same using Add/Remove Programs.

3. Installed Avast Antivirus FREE edition. When asked for a reboot at the
end of the install - say no. Then shutdown your computer.

4. Reconnect the internet connection

5. Restart the computer. The antivirus program will become resident and
immediately look for updates

6. Using "Uninstall A Program" remove any other manufacturer installed
program/utility that you either will never use or don't need.

By doing the above I was able to get her computer that was taking about 2
1/2 to 3 minutes to boot up down to approximately 1 1/2 minutes. The overall
experience was so much better.

Now, If you have been using the computer for a while before doing this there
is a possibility that your computer may already be infected by something
that slipped by the originally supplied internet protection suite. That is
another problem to be addressed if you still have problems.

I know there is always so much junk on a new computer but I don't know
what it is so don't know what to get rid of.
Just hope putting my old hard drive in with the new one didn't do
anything.

There's your answer...
Remove (uninstall) all unimportant and/or unwanted programs.

Harry.

I don't know what is what and don't want to remove something it needs to
work. Do I just go to Run-startup-and uncheck all?

Okay, you are wise to take it slowly, but you did get good advice.

An older hard drive is likely to be "IDE". If you attach 2 devices to
one "IDE Bus" the transfer of information on the "Bus" will be at the
speed of the slowest device. Your guess that the drive could be part of
the problem may be a good one.

If the tech attached the old drive to the same bus as your new drive
then it could be disk access speed you are lacking, did the tech advise
you not to do that at all?

Do you know roughly what size the old drive was, it may be so small that
once you copy the data from it you would be better to "Lose" it.

What is the computer, a model number off the front would help people to
help you because then they can look things up - we all have to do that

Check for RAM.. if you only have 1gb, increase it to 2gb.. if that doesn't
solve it, you may have lousy hardware or a fault somewhere.

With persistent problems on a new computer, it pays to make the decision to
take it back and demand that it is fixed before the store warranty runs out
on it..
