a few days ago my system asked me if i wanted to download a windows update -
i said ok and ever since my system on log on has been really slow and
unresponsive at times. When it first finished downloading it flashe dme some
message about windows being unstable? I'm no tech-head - can someone explain
what's happening - my system was fine til this stupid update business
started. I don't even know why it asked for an update - hadn't done it
before. Now i'm worried it has ruined my whole windows status

Kindly post back with more details. Is this on Windows XP or what?
What exactly was "the" update? Was it a service pack?

Go to Windows Update website, and when reach there, give it a few minutes,
then just select View Installation history from the left-side frame options.
It's important to know which update this is.

A service pack update should be followed by the user (you) doing some
housekeeping --- like Disk Cleanup & Disk Defrag (for which you can get
better help on a "general" newsgroup for your O.S.

If you get another "message" it's important to try to write it all down.

Use Notepad or Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log or C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

Scroll down all the way. Look at the set of lines for the last session at
Windows Update.
Look it over.
Do you see anything with "Error 0x........" ? What update item does it
list?

Have had exactly the same thing happen to me. It was an automatic update SP2
on Windows XP Professional. Startup takes about 5 mins now where it used to
be fairly quick, My 2Mb Broadband reacts more like a dial up modem. Response
time to anything takes ages i.e. opening progs, copying, saving etc.
I would also like to know how to resolve this problem as it is quite
annoying to say the least.
I can understand that updates are required in order to get the best security
and all that, but sacrificing one thing for another should not be the answer!
I have run adaware, done a virus check, got rid of temp files, emptied trash
and so on but it's still the same.
Please advise
