It's not clear that any of the issues you have mentioned are connected.
Presumably when you refer to having SP2 you mean you have Windows XP SP2,
but when you refer to SP3, you mean Office XP SP3. The Service Pack levels
of Windows and Office have no relationship with each other.
The Office XP SP3 update is quite large. The short version (that needs your
Office XP CD to be available) is 16MB, the full version (that does not need
the CD) is 60MB. So I would expect it to take a long time to download. You
don't say what sort of internet connection you have (dial-up? broadband?)
so I can't give time estimates.
If your PC is behaving slowly, this is not really a Windows Update issue:
you need to get your Windows installation working properly before trying to
use Windows Update or Microsoft Update. You should check out your PC for
malware, and check that your internet connection is working properly.
